On account of World Water Day, the Department of Geology, in collaboration with NCC, NSS, and YRC, organized a program on February 22, 2025, on the topic “Water Resource Management” at Keerthi Hall. Students from all science departments and volunteers from NCC, NSS, and YRC actively participated in the event.
The program commenced with a prayer song and Tamilthai Vazhthu, performed by the students. Ms. S. Lakshna, a second-year B.Sc. Geology student, welcomed the gathering, followed by Ms. K.M. Harini Sri, also from II B.Sc. Geology, who introduced the guest speaker.
Dr. N. Ezhili, Principal of Pavai Arts and Science College for Women, delivered the presidential address, sharing her insights on water conservation. The Chief Guest, Dr. A. Venkateshan, Head of the Department of Geology, Government Arts and Science College, Mettur, delivered a guest lecture on Water Resource Management. He explained the importance of groundwater recharge, various methods for water management, and provided a brief geological history of Namakkal, with a special focus on Sithampoondi. He highlighted the Anorthosite complex present in Platinum Ore, a rock type similar to lunar soil, which was used for testing ISRO’s Chandrayaan-III mission. Additionally, he elaborated on simple rainwater harvesting techniques, making them easy for students to understand and implement.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. L.A. Suruthi Sree, II-B.Sc. Geology. The program ended with the National Anthem.
As part of the event, NSS, NCC, and YRC volunteers conducted a rally on water conservation, spreading awareness among the public about the importance of saving water. They interacted with local residents to emphasize responsible water usage. Additionally, students and faculty members took a pledge to conserve water, reinforcing their commitment to sustainable water management.
