On 01.10.2018, a Debate on ‘Social Media Upgrades or Degrades Student Community’ was held in Pavai Arts and Science College for Women on behalf of Muthamizh Mantram in Keerthi Hall at 2.30 p.m. R.Kavipriya of II M.A. English welcomed the gathering. Dr.R.Rajeswari, Principal, presided over the function. M.Anish Fathima, P.Manimegalai and M.Sathyapriya of I and II B.Sc. Chemistry, E.Yuvarani of I B.Sc. Maths, P.Kokila of III B.A. English and P.Keerthika of III B.Sc.Physics took the side of ‘Social Media Upgrades Student Community’. S.Nanthini, K.Santhiya and K.M.Monisha of II B.Sc. Chemistry, P.Oviya of I B.Sc.Statistics, K.Sumithra of I B.A. English and S.Kamali of II M.A. English took the side of ‘Social Media Degrades Student Community’. Dr.K.Umamaheswari, Head, Department of Tamil acted as the Jury for the debate. In her verdict, stated that the negative effects of media are highlighted and exposed to the people, rather than revealing the beneficial part of media; and so the social media seems to degrade younger generation on the surface level, but the fact is that social media upgrades the society. She concluded saying that Medias were created by humans for their progression and hence students should not let the media rule them. Students should make use of the social media for their betterment alone. The debate provided an opportunity to the students to listen to a good argument over a thought provoking topic.
