On 02.02.2019, English Literary and Debate Association conducted a Debate in the presence of the Principal Dr.R.Rajeswari, in Keerthi Hall at 3.00 pm in Pavai Arts and Science College for Women. The programme began with the prayer song. R.Kavya of II B.A. English welcomed the gathering. The topic of the debate was “Is Women Empowerment Upgraded of Degraded”. The students who took the side of Women Empowerment is upgraded were V.Haritha of II B.A. English, P.Pavithra of I M.A. English and P.Kokila of III B.A. English. Those who took the side of Women Empowerment is degraded where G.Darsani of II B.A. English, S.Vinitha of III B.A. English and N.Subathra Devi of I M.A. English. Mrs.N.Kalaiarasi, Head, Department of English acted as the judge for the debate. The participants came out with their own points and views. The students who argued on the part of ‘upgraded’ cited many women achievers and strongly claimed that the status of women in the society in current scenario has been increased to unexpected level. They stated that women are physically, mentally and financially fit and outfitting men in all fields. Students on the side of ‘degraded’ sturdily opposed the opposite party by enumerating the sufferings inflicted on women by the family and the society. They argued that women are restricted from enjoying certain rights and they are not safe in the society. The final verdict was given that women empowerment is upgraded on the whole. Though women suffer in the hands of male dominants and the society, they are in fact enjoying all the benefits and rights granted by the government sector and the society. They are all independent and bold enough to break the barriers and achieve success. The only need in their further progression is the helping hands of men to curb sexual harassment and their shoulders to share female burdens. I and II UG and the PG Students of the Department of English were the audience. They attentively listened to the debate and enjoyed to the core. The heads of other departments graced the occasion with their presence. M.Rithika Roshni of II B.A. English proposed the Vote of thanks and the activity came to an end with National Anthem.
