On August 11, 2025, the Department of English at Pavai Arts and Science College for Women organized an insightful guest lecture titled “Literature’s Role in Society: The Pen and the People” in Keerthi Hall. Renowned experts Dr. V. Kumaran, Associate Professor of English, and Mr. R. S. Singaravel, Assistant Professor of English from Paavai Engineering College, shared their knowledge as guest speakers.
The event began with a soulful prayer song, followed by Tamilthai Vazhthu. V. Prathiuskha from II B.Com CA extended a warm welcome to the gathering, while T. Monisha and A. Devasri Akshaya from II BCA introduced the esteemed speakers, setting the stage for an engaging session.
Dr. V. Kumaran’s lecture emphasized the pivotal role of literature in reflecting societal values and struggles, highlighting its potential to drive change and inspire awakening. He encouraged students to view literature as a mirror of identity, resistance, and reform. His session also explored personality temperaments—choleric, sanguine, melancholic, and phlegmatic—along with the impact of parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and uninvolved) and teaching approaches (idealist, mild/moderate, rationalist, and practitioner). He further examined the diverse personalities of children—easy-going, slow-to-warm-up, challenging, introverted, extroverted, sensitive, adventurous, and observant. These thought-provoking insights enriched students’ understanding of human behavior, fostering a deeper appreciation of literature’s role in capturing life’s complexities.
Mr. R. S. Singaravel’s session traced the transformative power of literature across ages, offering a historical journey through the Renaissance and Reformation. He highlighted Shakespeare’s enduring legacy and the contributions of literary greats such as Milton, Pope, Tennyson, and T. S. Eliot, describing the Renaissance as a golden age of intellectual awakening. His passionate delivery inspired students to understand how literature redefined human thought, creativity, and artistic expression, while shaping society and individual perspectives.
The program concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Gomathi Sri from II B.Sc AI&DS, followed by the dignified rendition of the National Anthem. The session left students motivated to read, reflect, and respond to literature as responsible individuals.
The event proved to be a valuable experience, equipping students with insights into the significance of literature and its power to inspire positive change. Through the engaging sessions of Dr. V. Kumaran and Mr. R. S. Singaravel, students gained a profound appreciation for literature as both a reflection and a shaper of human experiences.
