Geological Field Study on Fossils and Cretaceous Formations

The Department of Geology organized a field trip on 19.12.2025 to the Perambalur District, where students visited the Karai Formation of Cretaceous age. During the visit, students collected various fossils, including belemnites and ammonoids, which helped them understand marine fossil assemblages of the Cretaceous period.

Following this, the students visited a National Park at Sathanoor Village, where they observed fossilized wood formed more than 20 million years ago. They also visited a nearby museum, where they learned about different types of fossils and their formation.

Later, the team proceeded to the TANCEM limestone mines in Ariyalur District. A professional geologist guided the students and explained the processes of fossil formation and the deposition of fossil-bearing strata in the mines. The students closely observed the mining area and collected fossil samples. The field visit was highly informative and enhanced their practical understanding of paleontology and stratigraphy.

On 20.12.2025, the students visited the Ariyalur Fossil Museum, where a wide variety of fossils and minerals were displayed. The museum featured dinosaur fossils and fossilized dinosaur eggs, providing valuable insights into prehistoric life. The students again visited the National Park at Sathanoor Village to observe the ancient wood fossils and later explored another nearby museum to gain further knowledge about fossil diversity.

Overall, the field visits were very useful and educational, enabling students to learn about fossil identification, fossil deposition, and geological formations through direct observation and sample collection.
